4-6 awards of $500 each presented to high school students in the five boroughs of New York City for original music compositions.

Awards will be presented to original compositions that express a profound artistic message, possess a unique musical voice, and communicate with clarity and power.


Composers must be enrolled in public, private or parochial high schools (9th-12th grades) and/or established in community organization programs in the 5 boroughs of New York City.

The work must have been composed after 2000.

The work can be of any duration and for any combination of instruments and/or voice(s).
(Electronic instruments are acceptable.)

All compositions, including texts or other copyrighted material(s) must show proof of all necessary copyright permissions.

The EAMA New York High School Composition Awards are based on the quality and communicative power of a musical work, not on length or instrumental forces.


   


Composers must adhere strictly to the following application procedure. Failure to comply will result in disqualification from the competition.

  1. Submit one (1) completed and signed application form. (downloadable)
  2. Submit one (1) legible copy of entire score of work.
    • The work must have a cover page bearing:
      • The title of the work.
      • The name and age of the composer.
      • The name of school and/or community organization program attending and current grade.
  3. (Optional) Submit one (1) recording (CD, DVD or Cassette only will be accepted) of the work.
    • The recording must only be of the submitted work. It must be labeled with the title of the work and the composer's name as well as the name of the performers and musical ensemble name.
    • If there are multiple movements, each movement should be recorded on a separate track or indicate precise cue numbers given for cassette tapes.
  4. A 1-page statement (in English) regarding the composer's view on the relationship between the submitted work and the listener.
    • The statement must be labeled on the top of the page with the title of the work and the name of the composer.
  5. CV or brief biographical sketch describing the composer's musical background (e.g. years of study, specific courses or program names, other relevant musical information.)
  6. A letter from a school administrator/community organization administrator or music teacher certifying that the composer is currently enrolled at the school or program indicated on application.
  7. Self addressed, stamped mailer for the return of the materials. While we will make every effort to ensure that the materials will be returned safely to the composer, we are not responsible for any los of, or damage to, any material submitted for consideration. No materials will be returned without a self-addressed stamped envelope or mailer included with submission.

The Application deadline for the 2010 EAMA New York High School Composition Awards is May 1, 2010.

EAMA will notify the winner, participants, and friends of the 2009 EAMA/ New York Award of the results on September 13, 2010.

Information regarding the 2010 EAMA/New York Composition Award recipient announcements will be available as of October 2010.

Not all the prizes must be awarded and if, in the opinion of the judging panel, no applicant merits the EAMA/New York High School Composition Award, no awards shall be made.

Jury panelists names will be disclosed at the time of award announcement.
